I was expecting the letters to be occurring in every other cell, roughly, but still can't see anything.

demeter - google the theme phrase and look up in wiki. Scroll down to find the words of a song. The first word is shown in some of the alternate letters of the first row of the grid.

Although I'm finished I am still wondering about a few letters I am missing in the long list.
I am missing the 1st L, the D and the Q - can anyone tell me the misprints which generate these letters?

Scarlett - I'm not sure whether you mean first L in clues as published or first L in alphabetical order.There are misprinted Ls in 4th word of 29 across, last word in 8 down and last word in 26 down. Misprinted D is last word in 12 across and Q in 5th word of 6 down.
