Eyelet-hole

Eye = see
'Reporter's unbroken' - hole, sounds like 'whole'
Not sure where the 'let' comes in, sorry!

Thanks once again malone.

The 'let' is probably from 'prevent'

is there a misprint as "present" means to let/allow/permit

I don't think so -Bradford's has 'let' under 'prevent'. (I hadn't looked earlier, just stuck in the answer!)

passport duly checked vico.
Chambers 12th shows
let(1). to allow
let(2) (archaic) to prevent

Sorry if I came over a bit peremptory, jazzgirl, but I've always thought 'without let or hindrance' a lovely phrase.
