Light in the clue refers to light gas which is helium - chemical symbol HE. Put that inside a plug (advertisement) gives A HE AD.

This solution, AHEAD, equates to the definition “up” in the clue.

Found this quite a bit harder than usual and would like appreciate help with the parsing for the following (I hope they're correct!)....

14a. One succeeding having caught Bill out (7) - INEXACT (Out)

17a. Food US out of concern gives disreputable state (10) - GRUBBINESS (Disreputable state) I presume 'Food' = GRUB but I can't see the rest.

39a. Arch after renovation revealing a grand cricketing figure (7,7) - BOWLING AVERAGE (Cricketing figure)

44a. Vessel's back briefly with garland and fishing equipment (7) - LEISTER (Fishing equipment) I can see 'Garland' = LEI but not what 'Vessel' (briefly) it's referring to.

3d. Produced over one thousand slips for novelist (5) - R?A?E Reade (Charles) is the only novelist I can think of but can't see how it would be parsed.

12d. Founder of cause to work with another in broadcast (4) - SINK? Would fit the definition (Founder) but how?

18d. Anger constituent when repeating old lines (1,8,1,8) - I REMEMBER I REMEMBER (Old lines) It's one of my favourite poems by Thomas Hood but I just can't see where 'Anger constituent' fits in.

Judge abandoning task deal with witnesses (8) - OBSERVED I think it's 'Task abandoning Judge' = (j)OB + 'Dealt with' = SERVED but 'Observed' is past tense and 'Witnesses' is present tense so I think i must have gone wrong somewhere.

36d. Musical that skit covers in abbreviated form (3,4,3,1) - THE KING AND I (Musical)
