28. The theatrical profession gets caught in their glare. I can't decide between footlights and spotlights. Does anyone have a convincing answer?

I've looked up the deinitions for spotights and footlights in case any light could be thrown (sorry!) on the subject, but like you cannot choose between them. However, I wouldn't opt for 'limelightS' as I don' t think it is used in the plural form?

Thank you for trying. I agree not limelights - it is not a plural word. Perhaps someone else will come up with a convincing answer.

It's probably not limelights, I agree - however originally it could have been a plural word. The origin of the term is the method of lighting early stages. Lime (calcium oxide) gives off a bright greenish white light when heated very strongly. Several of these "limelights" would have been used to provide illumination.

Fires in theatres were distressingly common!

The usual phrase used in the theatre is "caught in the spotlights", so that is what I have used.
