This looks like being the hardest of the year so far.

I've solved about a third of the clues, but have no idea what happens to the extra words (presumably they move to other clues?) or how to enter the grid entries that must be 'deduced'.

Demeter - I'm in pretty much the same boat with about half the clues solved. Happy to exchange answers and ideas.

This looks far too difficult / misleading for me to bother with. Life's too short...............

17a looks like ATOCIA, but why 'unwelcome in fur' ?

Crosswhit99 - I'm confused on that as well. Seems to be something odd with all the clues with the single letter adjustments. GULLS in 1a, IF in 3d, BAKE in 7d, TO in 13a and TWO in 33a - none of these are words that would normally make sense. Don't understand 13d wordplay either.

It looks like a cipher Demeter - GULLS becomes MARRY (+6/F), TO = UP (+1/A), FUR = ODA (+9/I) and TWO = RUM (+24/X).

Aha. Yes, well done. Great insight.

Presumably the cipher (or some other) works on the extra words to produce the entries that are to be deduced.

That's right, simply 'add' the 12 normally clued answers to the 12 redundant symmetrically opposite clue words to obtain the correct grid entries.
