One bird returned = I jug (nightingale)
without a nose = a rat

Expostulate

Old mate = ex
departed = late
around job at Uni = post + u

2D. Reason = expostulate
Old mate = ex
departed = late
job = post
uni = u.

The other one's right, but I can't parse i.
