I'm not convinced, but "The northern" might be T (??), man = king (chess) in alto (singer rather than singers, though.)

Singer (the clue had 'singer's) is 'alto - so take that out
Talking to - becomes tking. Northerner say (allegedly) 't'shop', 't'pub' etc, using 't' instead of 'the'. So 'tking' is the king (and man can be king, from chess, I think).

I'm rubbish at parsing, but hope this helps!
