Thanks both syzygy and aristo. Reckon it might be Monday before I attempt it. You'll understand why if you've read my "Peer Review" post.

thanks both, found it quite a test. i'm stuck on the last bloody letter in 7a. is it an Americanism? (i don't want the actual answer).
i expect it might be a bit early or late in the day for you both yet.
spk L8tr (that's how we say it in newspeak).

Oh, you're so hip, trevor. That one drove me nuts too. It's a term that's certainly used in American football, but it's also used in soccer (an extremely common word at any rate). If your 8d is solved you ought to be able to figure out which letter needs to be substituted.

It's also used in basketball and hockey- and romance.

cheers 'wristo, that was my last one. a good puzzle, i thought. 2d also held me up, i've vaguely heard of it, but not round 'these parts'.
unless the dudes who text things like 'L8tr' are into it.

Trying to finish this off, enjoying the concept but not clear whether or not the misprints should be applied twice in eg 1A or 26A...and if so does one of them always get changed back by a misprint in a crossing clue?

Hi, Ixion.

A - 10, 20, 26 & D - 5, 12, 16 each have a letter that needs to be changed appearing more than once,
and in a checked position.
The prologue makes no mention of that, but only one letter is changed.

1A - no conflict there. (Perhaps your number was a typo?)

Hope that helps.
