each could be 4 or 5 letters:
3. Man base
5. Vat changing hands

Also 2 clues from the grid: in some clues wordplay leads to the answer plus an additional letter not to be entered in the grid
34a Answer during current uproar (4) ??A? 2nd letter "possibly L"
18d Strain for some support, holding demos regularly (5) TE?S? could be tense - tee = support, but the rest?

5 Kier is the vat -it becomes Kiel, in Germany, when you change the 'r' (right hand) to 'l' (left).

I'm trying to remember the others!

18 Temse - a strain, colander. It's 'tee' with the 'm' and 's' from 'demos'.

Thanks malone - still stuck on the last bit - think i ahve some of the 33 letters wrong so my "journey" doesn't make sense - rangoon is in there possibly??

I didn't get all the extra letters - but enough to spot what I needed to highlight. I really don't know if 'rangoon' was in there - but you've definitely got the right rhyme/sequence of letters (I think I saw a couple of 'oon's!) Just treat your filled grid as a wordsearch.
