I think the last D is correct but perhaps not. The clue for that word (8 down) was:
Their entertainment value is questionable (7) and I had
R ? ? ? L ? S, so I have entered RIDDLES. The first D is the one that appears as the last D in the letters given for 10 across.

I think 10 is deadhead which means that your I could be wrong - deadhead is a stupid person and also deadheading flowers to tidy the flower bed

Thanks chrisg, I'm sure you are right. The I was in 'axis' but further investigation tells me that 'axes' is also appropriate, so deadhead is perfect. Sorry to take so long to thank you - most appreciated.
