I have completed the puzzle but have been unable to work out the wordplay for 33 down, though I am in no doubt about the answer. In 37 down the last 3 words seem redundant. Am I missing something?

Escuan - to get your answer you moved 'sun' to the end. Move it back to the beginning & look up resulting word in Chambers.

Still puzzled about 18a. I don't have access to the full print version of Chambers and no online sources give me a definition for what the wordplay seems to lead to - JPEN, as suggested above. Been searching for ages. Can anyone confirm that it's actually a word?

Ixion, may I ask you what YOU think about that problem discussed but not of course solved on AB concerning how to enter the one of those 4 words in the grid: are you for treating it like the other three, or do you think we're really meant to enter it in the way indicated by the nearest adjective in the verse? I value your opinion: hoping for advice on the AB thread is of course a waste of time!

Thank you, ixion. Much appreciated. When I'm feeling flush I may actually have to buy the latest full Chambers.

I don’t understand why “word pairs” initially observable. I can see some words that initially make sense but that is all.

As you go down "those" initials you will see the words of the couplet in pairs of anagrams
