Have you read The Walled Orchard yet? I almost died laughing when I got to the last page, where the narrator is talking about Socrates.

"I remember going to see him in prison while he was awaiting execution, and the poor fool still believed that he would be reprieved, right down to the last moment, when they handed him the cup of poison. He has become very fashionable since his death, and people have started writing down those great long one-sided conversations he used to have with people who couldn't get away in time."

Love the thread title. That's another thing the site keeps doing to me.

Cheers aristo, I probably wouldn't have noticed the title last week! and yes "probably" is an example of litotes.
I haven't started it yet as I've been asked by a mate to help his son with his choice of book for English at school. It could have been worse, Scott's "Waverley" which I last read 20+ years ago. Not sure I want to read it as a crit though.
From the snippet you've provided (not that I had any doubts beforehand) I know I will enjoy it. I also noticed the free flowing and inherent deadpan style when I was browsing pre-purchase.
