Sorry cut off

Solar means influenced by big star

Everybody says how easy the grid-fill is but I have found it very difficult. I can't solve 37 ac and 22 dn, and am baffled by the wordplay in 16 ac, 5 and 20 dn. Also is the last letter of 14 ac D or R? Either seems possible. Any hints for any or all of the above would be gratefully received. How the removed letters lead to the definitions is something I'll leave on ice at present!

14a ends in r I thought as I took it that frier sounds like friar (cried out as in sounds like)

I see 14 now - I had FR as the religious man, and In pa(i)n as fried or possibly frier, but couldn't see how CRIED could lose only one letter to become IED or IER.
It was 5 down whose wordplay I couldn't see.

I now have the completed grid and all the extra letters and they mean absolutely nothing, though there is a 3-letter word in the middle which does not define any of the 6 words I have from the wordplay-only down answers.
