Jolan: can I ask if the first word in 4 is best or could it be beat (overthrow) Sorry if I am being dumb here, but it's probably me not seeing the definition.

Read "best" as a verb, jazzy.

Ah Ari! I wuz getting worried when I didn't 'see' you earlier. And, Ixion, good to see you too. I thought #1 would not be too tough, you certainly saw it. Anyway, here is my working:-

1. key = F; to = +; anag (open) of “or shut” = ourths; yielding FOURTHS or “four of them make one”.

2. pitch as cloister “is” AN ANAGRAM “of” catholic priests

3. seconds of “ruling and add forty” = UNDO = overturn

4. accomplished = over; the pointless = th; argument = row; OVERTHROW = best (Chambers Thes)

5. novel has dual meanings ,anag indicator & book. DOMBEY AND SON

Hope you enjoyed 'em and that ginge has found his/her way home.

Best thing today was to see RE back.

Fourths was the first word that came to mind but I was just too dense to see "open" as an anagram indicator. Ah, well. Nice ones, Jolan.
So ginge gambles AND drinks. I wonder if he has any other vices.
Freeeezing here. At least we haven't had HIGHS below 0 (F) as they're having in Chicago for several days.

Wow" "The Master". I just love it. Methinks I'll go down to the pub and meet up with ginge. (If I find out any more about G I'll let you know, Ari) Off to the repast the noo. Bless.

Hi folks, didn't get #1 and for once I've given in and peeked. Drunk as a skunk and feeling great, until tomorrow morning when it'll no doubt be different. You name it aristo, I'm guilty. Don't fret jolan, Strathclyde's finest provide a mug of coffee and quite a reasonable roll and sausage should being assessed as D & D (again) prove to be a stumbling block in getting home!
