Thanks folks for all the tips. Finally finished last night. Would never have known the Argentine footballer or cricket reference. Sport is not my thing.

Hi Jazzie,
I need help with 3d please..! You mentioned that the first word of the clue (May i.e) is 'linked' to the third..(a) I should get the name of the people on the peninsula..BUT I have 'U' as the second letter..... therefore: ?U?A?A? ..am I right..?

The first word in the clue is the definition for the 4-letter answer (a synonym); with one more letter (a vowel) in front it becomes the present participle of a very short verb, corresponding to "due" in the financial sense --- I hope that's not too complicated!
In other words, it's not the word you were thinking of.................................

I find a crossword is so difficult when I've never heard of the answers! I didn't know the words at 8A and 24A or the flower at 16A, which, according to google, is of the sunflower family. Unless my flower is different to Jazzy's flower. My brain hurts. I'm watching the tennis.
