Just about finished this one and I'm feeling fairly confident about matching the modifications, but I can't puzzle out the first 15d clue. Is the unchecked letter an 'A'? I'd be grateful for any explanation of the wordplay and definition.

clues for corresponding entries are paired in alphabetical order,solvers must deduce which answer goes into which half of the grid.Some answers are modified to make other words.The nature of the modification determines which half the answer goes into.Clues to the remaining answers each contain an extra word or phrase defining one of the words from the modification.
