Just taking a quick peek in. Hi Ari, ginge, rossim and Jazzy. Happy to see the clues being well received. I completed it rather hastily and wondered if it would be OK. See you later.

Hi jolan just had to post , which is not making me popular in present company, which explains my smile if I have #2 correct ( amazing how the subconscious works!).

I was torn between two letters for the final one of 2. Actually still not sure... Perhaps barking up the wrong tree, though I think not.

Hi again!

I've just had a phone call to pick up some friends from the train (25 miles away) and I will not be here at 5. I'll probably be out till around 9 o'clock.

Look forward to seeing ALL the solutions (+ explanations) then.

See you. J

Thank you again, Jolan for these excellent clues. Here is my stab at them

1. He often sees characters without shoes dressed for a holiday in France? (2,4) En Fete? The words “he often sees” without “shoes”, gives “En fete”, “dressed for a holiday”?

2. Twin daughters take note of more than one big girl’s blouse (7)- Sissies? Sis + sis (twin daughters) with E (note) gives sissies – more than one girl’s blouse?

3. Simple compass-bearing craft (7) Spartan? Span- compass “bearing” art- craft, gives Spartan- simple?

4. Used to encourage skill (6-4) Second-hand? Encourage – second, with hand – skill (In Chambers) gives second-hand – used?

5. About to accumulate points and praise (5,2) Build up?
Accumulate points – build up and “build up” (without hyphen) is in Chambers as “praise”.

If my attempt at 2 is correct, can I single it out for special praise? To stand out even in a Jolan collection, a clue has to be something outstanding, and that was, I thought.
Thanks again for brightening my Tuesday.

I have only two to offer:
1. en fete (subtractive anagram )
4. second-hand (double definition)

Looking forward to seeing how the rest
were solved.
Thanks for your hard work, Jolan, as always

1- EN FETE (subtractive anagram)
2- Tried to work out doublet (blouse) as answer but will go with DOUBLE D (twin)
3- SP ART AN
4- SECOND-HAND
5- BUILD UP?

&*%^$ site- can so seldom get onto it.
