Sacred carols used to get special effect (8)
G*U*E*E*

The closest I have got to an answer is GAUDETE.

The 'G' comes from 'SCROOGE'
Perhaps mean at Christmas there's no goose on credit.

The 'U' comes from 'ESAU'
Twinned in the bible around East USA.

The 1st 'E' comes from 'HOLYWEEK'
Surprisingly, the whole key to this sacred period.

The 2nd 'E' comes from ' 'BETHLEHEM'
Where He was born to be at the helm of Christianity.

You haven't missed an A from the clue, have you? (e.g. used to get A special effect)

If so, could be GAUDETES

So much for my proof reading!

Yes, it should read:-
Sacred carols used to get a special effect (8)

However, although GAUDETES is an anagram of usedgeta, I struggle to believe that GAUDETE, the name of a sacred Christmas carol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaudete), can be pluralised.

But it probably is the required answer, unless someone can come up with anything better!

I agree - a bit far fetched. Is there more than one "Gaudete"? I suppose you could sing it more than once.
