Friend makes nerd go topless (4)

I can see ally means friend, but don't get the topless nerd

I should have explained that "topless" means remove the first letter so wally (nerd) becomes ally.
With apologies to anyone called Wally ;)

Ah I see, thank you. I'd got the bit about removing the first letter, but to me, wallies and nerds are entirely different species!
