Characters? A card is a "character" and a character may be played in a drama?

Yes, It's probably theatrical characters, but the
characters could possibly be those in a game
of mah-jong, the board game.

I agree with AB - to amplify, a "card" is a term used to describe a person who is a "character", as in one of my favourite books, Arnold Bennett's "The card" (featuring Denry Machin as the card)
