Thanks, cloverjo. Got it now.

Hi fellow solvers , found this too difficult initially until I saw that important 2 word diagonal . This resurrected my interest so had another go at it. Have now an almost complete grid but am struggling over two clues ,16A and 26A. For 16A encoded I have ' ?TH?DV ' and 26A have ' EP?CS? ' Any help gratefully received.

Uncle_w, I was stuck on these two as well. The only words I could find to fit the letters and possible definitions were KILNED and RIANAS but I'm not sure.

Thanks cloverjo . I had just got 'KILNED' just lying here in bed. ICE is to kill so that is definitely correct. I had also thought of ' RIATAS' but cannot see the wordplay. I was thinkng along the lines of 'LARIATS' with 'L' taken out !! Not happy with that though ! Cheers.

I have really struggled with this but do not really want to give up on it. I feel as if I am going round in circles because I cannot get the last word of the four word phase. Could somebody please put me out of my misery.
