23 Broil - boil, get very excited, with the 'r' from recipe inside.

23 D. Bally - a curse, swear word. It's not as strong, vehement as 'bloody'. It's the 'b' from Bass and 'ally' mate.

26 Was answered yesterday as 'Leftie', a red. I can't remember how it all worked - there's 'left', having gone away, and'ie', for example.

Broil and Bally for the 23's

Finished it I think but had to guess at

Writer Hemmingway perhaps promoting good man (6)
?T?R?E

Sterne (is it because anagram of Ernest? and Sterne wrote Tristram Shandy? Was he a good man Or am I completely off?)

St is saint, good man - and Hemingway was Ernest. Promoting the good man puts saint/st to the front- becoming st erne.
