Clue 3D: Element - the second I kept in here (not in US) (9)

Solution: aluminium

Please explicate second half of clue, apart from 'min' + 'I' possibly = 'second I', what about the enclosing 'alu um'?

In the US Aluminium is spelt without the second I..Aluminum

...Obviously the defn is Element and I think the remaining part of the clue indicates that the spelling is not the US version by indicating that the second I is kept in
