1. Seaman with daughter run for it. Abscond

Presumably 'Abs' for seamen and 'd' for daughter but 'con' doesn't mean with (except in Italian!).

2. Forty-five right for second tenor in Italian musical foursome. Quarter to.

I'm assuming this is Quartet (musical foursome) with an additional r (right) but that still leaves me with an extraneous 'o'!

Con can be used as a prefix in English meaning with

1 just looks badly constructed (I stand to be corrected!) as seamAn would be AB, not ABS. I have seen "con" for with before. Can't make anything of "scon" though.

Actually, kitabu, the clue would probably read slightly better with seamen rather than seaman (though it still isn't a great surface). Was your the misprint?

Hi chrise,

You're quite right Chrise - it is seamen rather than seaman. But see Ginge's point about able bodied seaman. Thanks to you all for your help - I always like to know why a clue is what it is!
