Hi chrise Often look at the Chain but unable to join the gang!!! Other commitments notably granddaughters (2 and 4) Also Mrs T tends to kidnap ( laptopnap) the machine.
Am gradually shaping up a Thingy but it all takes time

money = loot
means = tool
backing = turn tool to become loot

Yes I agree In a short clue there aren't many possibilities so Means must stand for TOOL.
I just cant see a strong tight connect between Mean(s) and tool and couldn't find one in Chambers either.
NVRHSS am putting this crossie to bed.

With regard to 'tool', I had found in my online dictionary that 'tool' was a synonym of 'means'.
But I also know that the Times setters seldom divert from their trusty Chambers.
So you're probably doing the right thing by putting this one to bed.
