After the first half hour or so, I thought this was going to be a breeze. I'm completely stuck on 3 clues though (21A, 22D and 31D) and have no idea what the thematic items are. There seem to be so many different ways of combining the unused letters.

Can anyone help?

Demeter - 21A is Tehran reduced to Tehr. 22D is hatred but I can't see how it works. Had = Bore but I'm not sure where the TRE fits in. I haven't got 31 either but have you solved 33?

Yes, 33 is IOWANS (WAN inside IOS)

Thanks demeter. As well as 31, I just need 23A and 24D for a full grid. I can already spot DARTMOUTH in the grid but don't know the significance yet.

23A is BODRAGS
24D is RENNES

Thanks. 31 is TOLSEY but it gives 2 possibilities for the missing letter. I have the two names from the unused letters but nothing else yet.

At least the theme is clear now. I had actually considered the first of the two words earlier, but I abandoned it because I couldn't see a second there.

I'm not sure what goes under the grid. Plunders can't be right can it? Thanks for any help.
