Sudokulover, thanks for that - I have finally got it. I forget to check diagonals, especially in such a large grid.

Only a couple of clues left to solve but I am looking for a second carol which has a letter "P" in the title. Am I on the wrong trail ?

No "P" - have a look at the end of the pre-amble - CUT BACK SWIM.....
