Many thanks.....The answer is SIMP, a short form of SIMPKIN, which, I am informed is an Urdu corruption of the word "Champagne" We live in a wonderful world of etymological oddities and discoveries :-)

Can anyone help with 1a & 3d? For 3d: "Fault in wood is round lower part of door" I have "windshake", but this doesn't fit in with my answer to 1a: Worn Scottish chemise? This makes one simply furious, being non-standard, for which I have "baresark". Any help gratefully received.

Assuming baresark (obsolete form of berserk) is correct what would 3d begin with?

Windshake should in fact be ringshake, both of which are defects in wood, but which are attributable to different causes. So now we know. Caught out again by the old fax Azed.
