Hi Slioch

Are you sure you've not mixed up two clues?

LEAR was a mad king and LEAR sounds like (said to have) "leer" = a lecherous look

Hi Jolan,

I now have the first letter as R, so I am now thinking answer is REGINAL (anagram of learing). Sometimes the clues and answers in this particular paper are not too clever.

Hi Sloich!
Thanks for reply. By George, your right about that paper.
REGINAL means "of a queen" or "siding with a queen", neither of which is even suggested in the clue.
The LEAR/LEER combination fits that clue so perfectly that I really think the paper has made a mistake and mixed up the clues.
Happy crosswording.
