I always feel in "thicko" mode when I can't get one which is not mentioned on the forum so must be obvious . I have "o?o?" assuming 1d is "proposal".

You're not a "thicko" - you have 2 letters correct - a "pipe" can be a woodwind instument - alternate letters of "or broken" will supply the answer.
