I haven't done the puzzle but would say that you must have an error with the L - E + RING* + EVE.

12a In the same place, stalk goat (4) I?E? there may be an extra K in the cryptic part.

4d. You need the Roman numeral for 11 in an anagram of wine with a letter taken out.

12d. Common Latin abbreviation for "in the same place" + a fairly obscure word for stalk with the extra k taken out.

I am still working on this from last Sunday as the quest for the ten cells which need altering is probing beyond me. Could somebody pease point me in the right direction.

Assuming you have the message spelt out by the extra wordplay letters, you need to change a letter in ten answers so that they become names of items you might find in the thing being demanded in the message.
This is where Bradford's dictionary is useful.

I thought the same but just look for words that could be changed into "what the knights wanted". The 1st letter change is in 1a 3rd letter, then you will find one in the bottom row which corresponds symmetrically with it. Come back if you can't find the other 8 changes.

Many thanks for your help Cloverjo and Sudokulover. I now have eight of the ten changes ( six of them across and two down ) and will go back to it later. Unfortunately my Bradshaws is the smaller paperback version so does not list everything.

some of them weren't in the bradshaws list - they are more well known as trees than shrubs .
11d & 17d and their symmetric partners are what you need
