After rereading my first ref (post#8) I think it simply refers to a comb, of which there is no need, as "they sheer close eneugh."
So scratch that one.
In the second link though, an esker or ridge, appears to have been used a natural site for a fort. (See last def for
KAIMES)
Perhaps because one of these ridges seemed to look like Scott, Kame of Hoy,
