Is it possible to parse from the clue extant

or Is the clue the whole definition? If so you would have to know this term already, otherwise you may surmise it if you had some letters in place!

CLUE is On which,in the main, one may touch up a bit on the side (10/5)

I got the answer by having all the letters in place!

Any input would be appreciated Cheers

Very difficult to get without crossing letters (I cheated, found the crossword, got three crossers and worked backwards)

OK so we all know now the answer is Boatswains/chair

Many of the letters can be taken from the clue/initially i was thinking anagram but then something was missing so ? i started looking for subtractives and other things

In the end i started thinking that maybe the clue is the definition?

If thats the case then surely you would have to know of a boatswains chair in the first place

Still none the wiser

Thanks anyway Cheers!
