I have an almost full grid, but am puzzled by the unclued entries and the author of the quotation. Is this anything to do with birds, or am I way off track?

I'm in a similar position cloverjo. But I can only find 4 clashes - symmetrically placed on one of the diagonals - and these letters are in 'Darwin', so was thinking the same about birds. Can't find a likely quote yet though!

As so often happens after posting, just spotted the author on one of the diagonals! Nothing to do with Darwin. Or birds.

cloverjo. You'll need the quotation to understand the birds.

Thank you, both. Found the author and the quote. Trying to finish off loose ends now.

I have 2 loose ends to tie and would be grateful for assistance:

10d must be NETTED - I can see TeeTotal, but the rest of the clue is a mystery

I have 4 clashing letters (I,L,O,S) but can't relate these to PMs in any way

Realised just now that it must be ?ILSO? which also explains why 10d isn't NETTED. Far too much labour for my liking.
