I am having the same problem as Sallyw.
My broadband is very slow so the clips take an age to download and I seem to click on all the things that make them linger. Eventually there is an option to "skip advert" and you can get out of it. I don't mind the other ads and indeed often click on them to help revenue but these are much more intrusive.
I'll try a different browser and see if it helps.

Should add that I am using Internet Explorer 10 and have only had this problem for a few days. I'll try Google Chrome.

I use IE and have no problems, but I think that my Kaspersky Security Package blocks all of it.

Well I use Firefox as my browser, and it was only today that I had the problem, although it seems to have stopped for now - fingers crossed!

I have been up in Derbyshire for the week-end so the Forum has not received my usual attention, sorry about that. I have sent an e-mail to Ash about this annoying video and hopefully he will be able to sort it out.

I would be interested to know how revenue is generated - is by the number of hits achieved by the site being used to sell the space or by the number of hits on the actual ads? With everyone trying to avoid hitting the ads what difference does installing a blocker actually make?

I think it is the number of 'hits' on the site but I will send your message to Ash to see what he says. He has been in touch with the advertising people about the annoying videos so hopefully they will disappear

In reply to Rambler's query, Ash tells me that his income is generated by the number of 'hits' on the site which in turn generates a greater number of adverts appearing on the site (but not necessarily viewed by the user, the adverts only need to appear to generate income). The greater the number of adverts that appear, the more money Ash receives.

If a blocker is used, then that 'hit' on the site doesn't count, therefore if everyone used blockers there would be no 'hits' which would mean no income and no site.

The income pays for the staff needed to create and maintain the whole Crossword site, not just the Forum. The regular updates take many hours of work and the staff, who all have university degrees, are obviously paid salaries commensurate with their qualifications.

The videos last week generated a good income but Ash took steps as soon as he could to have them turned off when he realised the problems they were causing. It was unfortunate that it happened over the week-end which delayed their removal but everything should be back to normal now.

I hope this explanation helps everyone understand the situation regarding the adverts and the necessity for putting up with them. If it's any consolation, they annoy me as much as they annoy everyone else!!
