Why is 28a "Heard"?
understand heard as in caught but the rest escapes me entirely.

The clue would have helped! It's...
Caught try by forward in the end (5)

Hear is try (as in law) and the 'd' is the last letter (signified in the clue by 'in the end') of 'forward'.

Thanks Malone can you also explain 4down
so I can understand it?

"Siemens staff, but not the number one, all there."

Have read a previous explanation that it is SANE - ie all there but the rest didn´t make sense to me.

staff = cane minus its number 1 i.e. c ...gives ANE
put this after S(siemans)

Thank you Sudokulover. I understand now. Wouldn´t have got it in a million years. Don´t think its a very good clue though but obviously if your clever enough you can work it out. Well done!
