Just got around to this. 2 Down clue is 'In sacred river, a leading character'

I have Alpha. Both As and the P are locked.

But why?

The Alph is a river in Coleridge's Kubla Khan, + a

Chris probably meant to add (Alph +a =) first letter of Greek alphabet, in that sense "leading character--- just in case it didn't completely click!

It's not exactly classical - but there is a River Alph in Antartica (named after Coleridge's, though).
