pleased to complete this one after getting nowhere on last weeks, I got the drift of it when I looked up last word of the extra letters in chambers, 2nd meaning, don't get title though.

rickye, as cloverjo said, if you draw the shape very carefully through all 6 blanks it should just about hit 32 cells. not sure about the footy bit.

rickeye, draw a circle dead centre,( I found a drawing compass which came in handy) which covers the six blanks, the north west name is A?????S making perdu(s),

Leon, thanks for the info about the second meaning of the final word in the extra letters. The quotation makes perfect sense now.

Have finally struggled over the finishing line, not least due to the very helpful comments on this thread (for which thanks !) LEON The puzzle title is delightful !!! Just think of the theme, and then think cryptically ! ! The beauty of it is that it resolves any lingering doubts one might have had regarding the left side of the grid.

Started this a bit late but now have completed grid and a shape that goes through the 32 cells and correct letters in blank cells to give 6 members all of which tie in with the clever title. So I have what seems a correct entry but still can't get last word of the quote in spite of correct clue answers. Seems I can't work out extra letters in 26 30 and 31 dn. So annoying.

Now have the word (and understand its relevance) but still don't get rationale for some extra letters even though I've got them all. Time to put it down I think,
