egrep (eg = instance) + (rep = theatre company) is a term from unix operating system, but this is really very obscure.

For 19A (Queen of Britain, we're told, and her favourite plant (5,4) ) I have ROYAL FERN but if anyone knows why this is the answer or what the answer should be I'd like to know.

Fern Britton is considered as the "queen" of television by some...Queen = Royal + Fern ?
There is a fern called royal fern

On second thoughts...Queen = royal + Britton we are told (sounds like Britain) Fern (Britton)
