Answer: xerosis - six backwards containing sore. In what sense is a couple of triplets six?

8 down: Spring a leak, perhaps as old ship(6)

Answer: Mayflower, but why spring a leak, perhaps? Be glad of any help. Thanks

A couple =2, triplets= 3 - 2 x 3=6.

2 sets of triplets equals six.

A leak is a flow er perhaps = may.

May is part of Spring too, presumably!

Thanks very much for suggestions, but think something is still missing. First clue asks for a couple of triplets not two sets of triplets. A triplet is not the same as three. Thanks again.

Chambers defines 'triplet' as - 'three of a kind, or three united'. So the clue can work - 'a couple of triplets' could be expressed as 'a couple of three of a kind', and that would lead to six. Well, I see it that way!
