Can someone please tell me if there is a connection between the 'swimming aid' and the removal of R's from the solutions?

Yes, TR goes out, another (clashing) letter in

Can anyone elaborate further? I have a clash in 20d, 29a (I think) - is TR everywhere replaced by that clashing letter? Any what does that have to do with SWIMMING AID?

This one has me quite baffled!

I thought it was to do with the fact you had to flip R - flipper. But I could be wrong.

It has been suggested elsewhere that the swimming aid is TR(out)F(in).

I doubt that this was the only case where "eff" in was used.

Could this be a red herring?
