Recently there have been three clues in various cryptics substituting 'w' for another letter and presumably set by the same compiler? I similarly thought they were mispwints!! The latest one being in the i No430 by Merlin on 26/6/12 :

1d Perform classical illusion as Simon's fate takes in a twaveller [3,1,5,2,4]

Scroll down to 'later tradition' to reveal Simon's fate.

Hence - Sawing a Roman in half.

Many compilers do appear under different names. Merlin is also Messinae in the DT.
