If you have 1d., then you'll know 1a doesn't start with a "d"!
As for 8a., answer is the name of an English dramatist, an anagram of "coy, v(ery) green". That's the way of the world!

14 Epigones?

Thanks Mamya! I may have another one wrong if Epigones is correct.So I'm re-thinking my answer to 23 ac. It could be two things. One fits with Epigones and the other doesn't. Both fit the clue for 23 ac. ! You will be right as I seem to be struggling this week! Finished now though!!!
