I don't get DOVE. Surely the bird and the past-tense verb aren't homophones on either side of the water. By the way, I was taught that "dove" is improper, that it should always be "dived"; guess I ought to get around more.

Dove as (improper!) past tense of dive. To sound can mean to dive.
Jams: tough spots, pickles, HOLES- with a minute thrown in! Sherlock: first-class cracker!
