It occurs to me that my Post 13 may involve an Americanism. Chambers does give "line" as "glib talk, not always honest", but there isn't a separate idiom "give line" except in the angling sense (though I suppose this works too!). To give someone a line (here at least) means to lead someone on, or deceive with false talk. "In more ways than one" of course means as both anagram and definition.
