Inevitably, the instructions that follow make things appear more complicated than they actually are, No.1 should get us off to a gentle start.

Seven numbered clues in order of solution size when “the French” connection [one(x1), two(x4) or three(x2) letters] has been been severed. Each clue contains two definition parts (which can appear anywhere in the clue) with wordplay that leads to the longer of the defined words. The indicated letter count refers to the smaller defined word.

A normal “link” clue continues the theme.

1.Ixion is feeble, first light always made easy(2)

2.Soft pedal for fear that badgers collective designation is protected by common market backing(4)

3.To go on irritating general perhaps swigged beer with tops off?(4)

4.They feel stress every second, half blind, yet they're relatively calm in a storm(4)

5.Dancer and company pull this expression of yearning to greatly amuse audience(4)

6.Clean in accordance with god, accepting nude dancing(5)

7.See! Partners heavy blows boxing Queen, they rarely connect(5)

Gift wrap old guys, regularly insulting the French(5)

Shall I start the ball rolling?

I think 6 is UNDER. (LA)UNDER. Anag. of NUDE ins. LAR.

Think I know the link word as well, but not 100% sure of wordplay.

Struggling with the rest, including the "gentle" no. 1.

Oh dear, I think I've messed up with No.1 - you may actually have to be the setter for it to make sense!

I thought 'ixion...' would lead to 'im'/I'm, but then thought it could be 'me'...

Glad you're on board Joan.

On 2, a badger's collective is a cete. The Common market used to be known as the EEC, so backing would give you CEE. Might be something to work with there, but I can't see it yet.
