Couple of tips:
1. Keep your mouse away from the ads, right & bottom. You will probably lose your reply.
2. One thread is better than two.

Need those too. Misreading clues, & started badly by downloading last year's puzzle.

I realise that I am being dense but I still cannot fathom the 16d's.

'First sign of European agency's taking cover, being in the wrong place (7;7)

In post 33 I was told to concentrate on the first two words - double definition. Can anyone please elaborate?

Rosie, the first answer is a word that means 'first' and also means 'sign' (as in write).

Thinks I've filled in the grids correctly, but can't find what to highlight. Are the words entered answers, part of them, do they go across black spaces or...?

They do go across black spaces...you need two characters in a novel suggested by the thematic phrase written by the author of and "fair, even handeed..." etc

It'e easier than it sounds - read across the way, in both grids, ignoring all black squares.
