Always nice to know when a Spectator crossword isn't too hard. I don't like the really difficult ones, much too depressing, especially when you can't even understand the instructions!

It must be easy this week ....... even I finished it in under an hour ! ;o)

Hello all. I need help with 22down.The shoulder is split(5). SPAL?. I think its spall or spald , but why?

Ive tried that but my Chambers(11th Ed.) doesn't help when I looked up shoulder or split

amtaff - try the other way round - look up spall/ spald - not much help though - it could be either.

I don't know if this will help but in the Chambers Crossword Dictionary "spall" is given as an altenative for both.

I'm having trouble getting my word counts to match the preamble. I've got in total four 2-word answers, at 4dn, 7dn, 18ac & 32ac. I'm not sure which is supposed to be hyphenated. Have I misunderstood something?
