Thanks anotheray. I have the anagram, but still can't see the G&S connection. Perhaps Twinsnan could help us out on this one?

OOPS!!! So so sorry everyone, mixed up 89 with 90, I do apologise. 89 is the anagram and 90 is the Gilbert and Sullivan. I know the feeling of going through reference books, internet and thesaurus only to find you are barking completely up the wrong tree and this time I am the cause of it. Hope this sorts it out for all of you. I have also looked in the reference library for the Ashley one and see that the word can be spelled either way so obvious the lady is the answer here. Off I go now, red faced and embarrassed!

Still stuck on three despite Anothery's clues - they are: 21.Bank on the Spanish using irregular verses (8) - clue = shipping forecast. Have been through all the names for shipping areas but maybe I am on the wrong track? 40. Rail against Luxembourg & start a complete revolution in high places (6,4) - clue = manouvre in sky. Can only think of loop but that is no help for the first word? 86. Group role playing together produced a flag (9) - clue = word for group & anagram of role. Tried several different words but don't fit? So if there are any other clues, or indeed answers now, I would be a happy chappy (ess!). Thanks.

re Q53, I have put LaVra with a "V" as, according to Wikipedia, the word originally meant a cluster of cells or caves for hermits!. When I google LauRa, it just comes up with girls names or Laura Ashley. Who knows what answer the compilers have though!!!

Hello AB. Yes - I have seen that one too i,e. Think of plane tricks- a ballet rail with Luxembourg, and what a ball does. Well planes do "stunts/loops"; a ballet rail is a "bar" and a ball "bounces" but no idea whee Luxembourg comes in. Just can't fathom it out at all.

Barrel roll has something to do with Planes...

I may be well off the mark,as I have not really been following the thread, but very impressed with your enthusiasm.

The ballet rail is a Barre + L (for Luxembourg)
Think of a shipping area that is ??? Bank and that forms most of the answer
What's a simple word for a pop group + anagram of role

Not to worry, Twinsnan; I enjoyed reading through Pinafore and Pirates! But I'm not sure that Q90 is G&S either!

Bill,
Asea shanty from Gilbert and Sullivan I believe.
"While the raging seas do roar
And the stormy winds do blow
And we jolly sailor boys were skipping up aloft
And the land lubbers lying down below, below, below
And the land lubbers lying down below."
