greedy kite - I don't know if I'm reading your last posting about UCS correctly, but you don't put the question in - either the letters you have for a missing word, or all the letters for an anagram. Any help?

AJT1:unfortunately I did exactly that,identical to SL's attempt,& it just doesn't work---I have no idea why.Remains a mystery.I can't be that thick!Thought computers were logical,i.e. same input,same output.Forget it:I finished anyway---but thanks all the same,and goodnight!Now struggling with quite different German cryptic puzzle,this time with no assistance whatever!I must be a masochist.................

Greedy kite - it's not just you! I tried the crossword solver and got the same 'no answer found' as you.

UCS definitely works. Even removing all unchecked letters: ?nd?i?,n?ls??? returns only one name. All caps, same thing.

Agree with ixion re 34D. The indicator is in the wrong place, so struggled with _ AZ_ _ _ for a long time.

Thanks, Tony

Greedy kite - Interested to read that you do German cryptics too. Ich auch. Which one(s) as a point of interest? SZ or Die Zeit maybe? I do the latter regularly but have never won anything. And you?

Ironman:I do "Die Zeit" every week, have never won,but always enjoy it,happen to have a friend in Hamburg who knew the setter as father of one of his pupils, and yesterday this friend had to confirm a lot of suggestions:I was probably so tired out after finishing Spectator ,I found it unusually difficult, finished at midnight, and as always learned a few new things about German cultural history, even one new word (Kantilene),but as yet I know of no real forum like here, joined "Wer weiss was" but not very impressed, but normally can finish in about an hour (lived there nearly 40 years teaching). The setter by the way is (like me) originally a Classicist! So if you want to compare notes, maybe call me under this pseudonym.I'm sure you realize it's available online early Thursday morning (just google the obvious )tho' in principle I get the paper with magazine ordered thru shop here in SW France nearly always tho' expensive:I like the two together anyway & it helps to keep me in touch with a language I learned from scratch. Also vielleicht Auf Wiedersehen! What's your background?
